Methodology
Concrete test hammer
The hammer measures the rebound of a spring-loaded mass impacting against the surface of the sample. The test hammer will hit the concrete at a defined energy. Its rebound is dependent on the hardness of the concrete and is measured by the test equipment. This is one of the most commonly used tests, even though the obtain values, if not combined with ultrasonic testing (SonReb method), are often not to be very significant.
The use of the hammer, as a non-destructive test instrument, is regulated by the UNI EN 12504-2 / 2001.
Rebar Location test
The presence of reinforcement in the concrete structural elements (beams, columns, walls) is detected by the influence that reinforcing steel has upon an electromagnetic field generated by the rebar detector. These tests enable "to read", in projection on the concrete surface, the position of the reinforcement, and it allow to estimate the measures of bars spacing and concrete cover of the longitudinal rebars, and the step of the brackets. The use of pacometer as non-destructive test instrument, is governed by regulations BS 1881: 2004

The ultrasonic tests rely their ability to estimate the strength of the concrete on the speed of propagation of ultrasonic waves in the concrete, the pulse velocity is related with the elastic modulus of concrete, consequently it correlates with the compression resistance. the objective of the ultrasonic test is the determination of mechanical pulse vibration propagation time in the concrete between one or more pairs of significant points. The use of ultrasonic tester, is regulated by the UNI EN 12504-4 [UNI 2005]. The frequency of the signal transmitted from the transducers must be between 10 kHz and 200 kHz.

In order to reduce the errors committed with ultrasonic tester and rebound hammer tests has been developed the combined method: SonReb. It is noted that the humidity content does underestimate the rebound index and overestimate the ultrasonic velocity, and that with increasing age of the concrete, the rebound index increases while the ultrasonic speed decreases. The combined use of the two methodologies allows you to partly compensate for the mistakes made by using the two methods separately. The application of SonReb method requires the evaluation of the ultrasonic local velocity values V and the rebound index S.
